Things to Do Right After you arrive in Canada

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

Living abroad brings you a lot of new experiences, especially when you start getting your proper documentation to settle down in your new city. Canada is recognized as being an immigrant-friendly country, offering at some places an information brochure available in different languages. Here there is a list of things to keep in mind when you arrive:

1. Getting a SIN Number. If you are legally entitled to work in Canada, you would need to get your Social Insurance Number aka SIN. This personal 9-digit number is required for anyone who works in Canada like full-time students, workers, permanent residents or citizens, and to have access to government programs and benefits. When you arrive in Canada, you should apply to get your SIN by online or mail to follow social distancing procedures due to covid-19 restrictions. You can also apply in person at your nearest Service Canada, but first, you have to check if it is open.

You can find more info at: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html?utm_campaign=not-applicable&utm_medium=vanity-url&utm_source=canada-ca_social-insurance-number 2. Driver’s License. Most of the cities in Canada have a good transportation system where you can get everywhere easily, but if having your own transportation is part of your plans, you have to start thinking about getting a driver's license. You can find all the requirements for the process on your province’s website. Also, you have to consider there are different types of licenses and restrictions depending on your experience, but if you have a previous driving license from your home country you will be able to use it to prove your experience.

3. Government ID. If you do not have a driver’s license issued in Canada, you could get a government ID or Photo ID when identification is required. As a new resident in the country, the most common ID is the passport, but It is easier and safer to leave your passport at home and get a government ID if you are required to present an identification to do daily things like opening a bank account or renting a book in the public library. Every province has its own ID and requirements. You can check the specific info for every province on their respective website.

4. Opening a bank account. It Is very important to get your own bank account in Canada because you will need it to receive your salary or your tax return. The recommendation is to compare different banks and see what is the best for you because some banks offer special promotions for students or workers giving 1 year free of charge. To open your account, you will need your SIN, ID (passport), Permits (Study or Work), job offer or job contract (if applicable) and Student ID (if applicable). Bank may ask for additional documents.

5. Renting a place. Looking for a place sometimes can take time, but when you find the correct one the process can be very fast. First of all, it is important to evaluate the neighborhood, accessibility and price. Prices may vary depending on the city, neighborhood, building amenities and demand. Most of the time, heat and water are included in the price, so you only need to consider the electricity bill as well as parking or storage room, if needed.

The most popular ways to find a place is online (Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace) and going for a walk. Some buildings do not go online and their available suites are posted at the entrance door.
