Post-graduation work permit: Working in Canada after completing your studies




Post-graduation work permit or PGWP is a work permit issued by IRCC to an international student who has completed a study program in a designated learning institution. Usually valid for the same length of the studies. For example, if you study for a 1-year diploma, you will probably get 1 year of work permit validity. When the program is for 2 years, the PGWP is for three years.

To be eligible for a post-graduation work permit, the applicant must:

  • Have valid temporary status or have left Canada.

  • Have graduated from an eligible designated learning institution (DLI).

  • Have completed an academic, vocational or professional training program at an at an eligible institution in Canada that is at least 8 months in duration leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.

  • Have maintained full-time student status in Canada during each academic session of the program or programs of study they have completed and submitted as part of their post-graduation work permit application. Exceptions can be made only for the following: (1) leave from studies or (2) final academic session.

Spouse or common-law partner, may be eligible to apply for an open work permit if the principal worker is employed in an occupation in skill level 0, A or B.

Update: Due to Covid-19 pandemic, On January 8, 2021 the Government of Canada has announced a new policy to former international students to extend their post-graduate work permit. Applications will be open from January 27 to July 27, 2021.

To apply for an open work permit under the public policy, an applicant must:

  • have a PGWP that expires on or after January 30, 2020, or a PGWP that expires in 4 months or less from the date they apply.

  • still be in Canada

  • have a valid temporary status, or be applying to restore their status
